Lokayukta Probes Alleged Irregularities in Hasanamba Festival Lighting Tender

Hassan, : Allegations of financial irregularities have surfaced in connection with the lighting arrangements for the annual Hasanamba festival, prompting an investigation by the Lokayukta authorities.

The temple of Hasanamba, a powerful presiding deity who grants darshan only once a year, attracts lakhs of devotees during the annual festival. Last year, the event witnessed record footfall, creating history in Hassan district. However, controversy has now overshadowed the celebrations following claims of large-scale misappropriation in the electrical illumination tender process.

RTI activist Manu filed a complaint alleging irregularities in awarding the lighting contract. Acting on the complaint, Lokayukta officer Gayathri conducted an inquiry at the Hassan City Municipal Council office premises. The complainant, along with municipal engineer Sujatha and retired engineer Rangaswamy, was questioned during the probe.

According to the complaint, despite multiple contractors applying for the tender, the contract was repeatedly awarded to a single bidder every year. It is alleged that proper documentation was not furnished to the Lokayukta officials when sought. The complainant has also accused authorities of misusing devotees’ contributions and indulging in extravagant spending not only on lighting but also on floral decorations and other festival-related works.

During the inquiry, officials reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the failure to provide complete records. The investigating officer is said to have warned that the absence of proper documentation would be mentioned in the final report. Sources said municipal officials appeared uncomfortable while responding to pointed questions raised during the hearing.

The complaint further alleges that more than ₹15 lakh irregularities occurred in the lighting contract alone. A specific condition giving preference to contractors with prior experience in the Hasanamba festival is said to have limited fair competition, resulting in repeated allotment to one contractor.

The Lokayukta inquiry is ongoing, and further action is expected based on the findings.
