KMF rolls out QR code system to curb fake Nandini products

Bengaluru: Following the recent detection of counterfeit products sold under the name of Nandini, Karnataka’s flagship dairy brand, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has announced a new security initiative to safeguard its products and protect consumers from fraud.

Nandini, the dairy brand owned by KMF, is widely regarded as a symbol of Karnataka’s pride. Over the years, it has built a reputation for quality milk and milk-based products not only across the state but also in other parts of the country and abroad.

However, recent incidents of fake products being circulated in the market under the Nandini label have raised serious concerns about brand misuse and consumer safety. In a joint operation earlier, KMF officials along with the police had traced and seized counterfeit products that were being sold as genuine Nandini items.

The development prompted the federation to strengthen its quality assurance and anti-counterfeiting measures. As part of its master plan, KMF has now introduced QR code authentication on Nandini product packaging to help customers verify the authenticity of the items they purchase.

The new system has been initially implemented on Nandini ghee packets and bottles. Consumers can scan the QR code printed on the packaging using their smartphones. After scanning, they will be required to enter a displayed number, following which a one-time password (OTP) will be sent to their mobile device.

Once the OTP is entered, detailed information about the product will appear on the screen. This includes the place of manufacture, date of production, batch details, and the market code under which the product was distributed.

Officials said this digital verification process is expected to significantly reduce the circulation of fake products in the market and enhance consumer confidence in the brand. By enabling traceability, the system also allows KMF to monitor supply chain movement more effectively.

Speaking on the initiative, KMF Managing Director Shivswamy said the QR code mechanism would play a crucial role in preventing the sale of counterfeit ghee. “Even if someone attempts to duplicate the packaging, the digital authentication will help us detect discrepancies and take action,” he said.

Currently, the QR code feature has been introduced only for ghee products. However, KMF is considering expanding the system in a phased manner to other Nandini products as well.

With this move, KMF aims to reinforce the integrity of the Nandini brand and ensure that customers receive only genuine, high-quality dairy products.
