Karwar woman duped of Rs 10.98 lakh in online part-time job scam
Karwar: A 32-year-old woman working in the private sector has been cheated of ₹10.98 lakh after falling victim to an online part-time job scam in Karwar, Uttara Kannada district. A case has been registered at the Karwar Cyber Crime Police Station.
According to the complaint, the victim received a Telegram message on November 4 from a user named “Mishika,” offering a part-time opportunity that promised earnings of up to ₹3,000 per day by working from home.
After she expressed interest, the fraudsters contacted her via WhatsApp and sent her a link to a website named “Rent.” She was instructed to log in and provide ratings and reviews for products listed under various companies.
To gain her trust, the scammers first asked her to invest ₹10,000. Soon after, they returned ₹15,268, including “profit,” making her believe the job was legitimate. They then convinced her to invest higher amounts by promising bigger returns.
Encouraged by local acquaintances—identified as Rohan Tandel of Aversa in Ankola and Tejas of Karwar—and with financial support from them, she transferred a total of ₹10,98,113 in multiple transactions to various bank accounts as directed by the scammers. Eventually, when neither the principal amount nor the promised profit was returned, she realised she had been defrauded.
Based on her complaint, Karwar Cyber Crime Police have registered a case against unknown persons operating the mobile number 8985056339, along with the two local suspects, Rohan Tandel and Tejas. The case has been filed under Sections 319(2), 318(4), 49 read with 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Police have begun an investigation.
