karnataka govt freezes KSOU bank accounts over alleged financial irregularities

Bengaluru : In a major action, the Karnataka government has ordered the freezing of all bank accounts of Karnataka State Open University following serious allegations of financial irregularities. The move is seen as a strong step to safeguard public funds and ensure transparency in the ongoing probe.
According to official sources, the decision was taken after multiple complaints and findings pointed towards irregularities in the university’s financial transactions. Acting on these concerns, the government directed banks to impose a debit freeze on all accounts linked to KSOU.
A communication in this regard was issued by N Kumar, Deputy Secretary (Universities), to various bank branch managers. The letter instructed them to freeze not only the primary accounts of the university but also any associated accounts connected to its financial operations.
Officials stated that the step was necessary to prevent further movement of funds while investigations are underway. “The objective is to ensure that public money is protected and that the inquiry proceeds without any interference,” a senior officer said.
Sources indicated that the action follows findings from a fact-finding report and a committee led by retired High Court judge Justice B A Patil, which reportedly flagged serious lapses in financial management within the institution.
The controversy surrounding KSOU had already intensified after the university allegedly defied government instructions regarding an academic event. The state had earlier directed KSOU to cancel the ‘Ekata Manava Darshana’ conference due to lack of proper permissions and procedural compliance.
However, despite the directive, the university went ahead with the programme at its Mysuru campus, further escalating tensions between the government and the institution. The event was reportedly linked to an ideologue associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, adding a political dimension to the controversy.
The freezing of bank accounts marks a significant escalation in the standoff between the government and KSOU. Officials have indicated that further action could follow depending on the outcome of the investigation.
The development has raised concerns among students and staff, with many awaiting clarity on how the financial restrictions might impact academic and administrative functioning in the coming days.
