Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Delayed Again as Congress High Command Yet to Finalize Minister List

The much anticipated expansion of the Karnataka cabinet has once again been delayed, leaving ministerial hopefuls waiting as the Congress leadership continues discussions in New Delhi. Although preparations for the swearing in ceremony are reportedly underway in Bengaluru, the final list of ministers is yet to receive approval from the party high command.

The delay has sparked intense political speculation because around 20 ministerial positions are still vacant. More than 35 legislators are believed to be competing for these posts, making the selection process increasingly challenging. Party insiders suggest that the leadership is trying to strike a balance between experienced leaders and fresh faces while also maintaining regional and social representation within the cabinet.

Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has been in the national capital since earlier this week, holding meetings with senior Congress leaders to discuss the expansion. Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other state leaders have also remained in Delhi as consultations continue. However, the biggest hurdle appears to be the pending approval from senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, whose busy schedule has reportedly delayed the final decision.

According to party sources, multiple lists of potential ministers have been prepared. One list is said to have been recommended by Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, another by former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, while the Congress high command has also prepared its own shortlist. The final cabinet is expected to emerge only after these recommendations are reviewed and approved.

The delay has disappointed several aspirants who have been lobbying for ministerial positions over the past few weeks. Many party workers and legislators had expected an announcement earlier, but repeated postponements have kept the suspense alive. Political observers believe that accommodating various factions without triggering internal dissatisfaction is one of the biggest challenges before the Congress leadership.

Reports indicate that Rahul Gandhi has been occupied with other national political engagements, including issues related to the NEET controversy, which has affected the scheduling of the crucial meeting. As a result, Karnataka leaders continue to wait in Delhi for the final green signal before returning to Bengaluru.

Despite the uncertainty, preparations for the oath taking ceremony have reportedly begun at Lok Bhavan in Bengaluru. Temporary structures and other arrangements are said to be in progress so that the event can be held immediately after the cabinet list receives official approval. Police officials have also reviewed security arrangements in anticipation of a large gathering of political leaders and supporters.

Another development attracting attention is the brief visit of senior Congress leader Zameer Ahmed Khan to New Delhi. After meeting the party leadership, he returned to Bengaluru, and his confident appearance has fueled speculation that some decisions regarding the cabinet may already have been communicated informally. However, no official confirmation has been issued.

The prolonged delay has also provided the opposition with an opportunity to criticize the ruling government. Opposition leaders have questioned why the state leadership continues to remain focused on cabinet expansion while Karnataka faces pressing issues such as drought conditions, agricultural concerns and other governance challenges. They argue that the government should prioritize public welfare over political appointments.

With the Assembly session scheduled to begin soon, pressure is mounting on the Congress leadership to complete the cabinet expansion without further delay. Filling the vacant ministerial positions is considered important for ensuring smoother administration and preparing the government to respond effectively during the legislative session.

For now, all eyes remain on the Congress high command. Whether the long awaited approval arrives in the coming days and whether the swearing in ceremony proceeds as planned will determine the next phase of Karnataka politics.
