Karnataka braces for extreme heat; authorities issue health advisory amid rising temperatures

Bengaluru : A widespread heatwave has begun affecting large parts of Karnataka, with the India Meteorological Department warning that temperatures are likely to increase further over the next two days. Cities including Bengaluru are already experiencing rising heat levels, causing concern among residents.

According to officials, coastal Karnataka and Kalyana Karnataka regions are facing the brunt of the heat, with temperatures likely to reach up to 45 degrees Celsius. The IMD has issued alerts for districts such as Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Bidar, and Bagalkot, where heatwave conditions are expected to intensify.

Uttara Kannada has recorded temperatures around 37 degrees Celsius, with forecasts indicating a possible rise to 42 degrees. Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have also reported high temperatures, although there is a slight possibility of light rainfall in some areas.

Medical experts have urged people to take precautions against heatstroke, especially during peak daytime hours. “Avoid direct exposure to sunlight between 12 pm and 4 pm. Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated,” doctors advised.

People have been encouraged to consume fluids such as tender coconut water, buttermilk, and homemade fruit juices. Wearing loose, light-coloured cotton clothes can help reduce heat absorption. Authorities have also recommended using protective gear like hats or umbrellas while stepping outdoors.

Children and elderly individuals are considered particularly vulnerable, and parents have been asked to limit outdoor activities during hot afternoons. Officials have also warned against consuming excessive caffeine and sugary beverages, as they may worsen dehydration.

Dry weather conditions are expected to persist in north interior districts including Belagavi, Bidar, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Haveri, Gadag, Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Koppal, Ballari, Raichur, Yadgir, and Vijayanagara. Meanwhile, some parts of south interior Karnataka such as Shivamogga, Chamarajanagar, Mysuru, Mandya, Kodagu, Hassan, and Chikkamagaluru may receive light to moderate rainfall.

As the heatwave intensifies, authorities have emphasised the need for public awareness and preventive measures to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses across the state.
