Karnataka approves AI centre for biotechnology at IBAB in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: In a significant push to strengthen the state’s technology ecosystem, the Karnataka cabinet has approved the establishment of an Artificial Intelligence Centre of Excellence (AI-CoE) for biotechnology at the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology in Electronics City. The project will be implemented over a period of four years at an estimated cost of ₹20 crore, IT and BT Minister Priyank Kharge said.

The initiative aims to integrate artificial intelligence into biotechnology research and innovation, positioning Karnataka as a leader in next-generation technologies. The government, through its departments of electronics, IT, biotechnology and science and technology, has taken a proactive step in recognising the transformative potential of AI at an early stage.

Kharge stated that the Centre of Excellence will play a crucial role in strengthening the AI ecosystem in the state, enabling collaboration between researchers, startups and industry stakeholders. The move is expected to accelerate innovation, particularly in healthcare, genomics and bioinformatics.

In another key decision, the cabinet has approved the transfer of 51 percent equity in the Karnataka Technology and Innovation Museum Foundation to Unboxing BLR Foundation. The decision is aimed at promoting innovation, technology awareness and public engagement in science and emerging technologies.

The Karnataka Technology and Innovation Museum is being developed at the NGEF campus in Baiyappanahalli under a public-private partnership model. The total project cost is estimated at ₹100 crore, with ₹49 crore contributed by the state government and ₹51 crore by private partners.

The museum is envisioned as a hub to promote innovation-led economic growth, foster startup culture and create employment opportunities. It will also serve as a platform to connect industry, academia and policymakers, aligning with Karnataka’s broader vision of becoming a global innovation hub.

Officials said the Unboxing BLR Foundation will focus on nurturing emerging and high-growth sectors, while supporting startups through policy backing, pilot opportunities and industry collaboration.

The initiative is in line with the state’s innovation and startup policies, and is expected to enhance Karnataka’s standing as a leading destination for technology and entrepreneurship.
