Panaji: A controversial event titled “Goa Kama Sutra and Christmas Celebrations Stories” has sparked strong opposition, leading to the cancellation of the event by local authorities.
The event, which was scheduled to take place from December 25 to 28 in Goa, drew widespread criticism after advertisements promoting the event went viral, triggering protests from local NGOs and social groups.
Following the backlash, police in Goa stepped in and ordered the organizers to cancel the event. A senior police official confirmed that instructions were given to remove advertisements from social media and prevent the event from taking place.
The controversy began when the promotional poster for the event, which linked Christmas celebrations with the Kama Sutra, went viral on social media, causing public outcry.
In their response, local NGOs expressed concerns over the event’s controversial theme, fearing it could disrupt the social harmony in the coastal state. The Goa police, after reviewing the situation, took the matter seriously and intervened.
A post shared by the police on social media stated that the event’s organizers had been instructed to withdraw the advertisements and ensure the event did not proceed.
The event was being organized under the banner of the Bhagwan Shri Rajneesh Foundation, an organization linked to Osho Ludhiana Meditation Center, with Swami Dhyan Sumit listed as the founder. The promotional poster, however, did not specify the exact venue for the event.
The controversy surrounding the event has once again brought to light the ongoing debates around freedom of expression, public morality, and cultural sensitivities in Goa. While the police and local authorities have acted swiftly to cancel the event, this incident underscores the growing role of social media in shaping public discourse and influencing the actions of authorities.
Goa, known for its vibrant tourism industry and cultural diversity, has often been at the center of such controversies, balancing between its image as a liberal tourist destination and the conservative values held by various sections of society. This latest episode reflects the tension between modern expressions of culture and the traditional sensitivities of local communities.
Authorities have emphasized their commitment to maintaining public order and have warned event organizers to be mindful of the cultural and social sensitivities in the state when planning future events. The case has also sparked a larger debate about the boundaries of artistic expression and the role of law enforcement in regulating cultural events.
