BWSSB creates history with ISO certification for energy management

Bengaluru : The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board has created history by becoming the first water utility in the country to receive the prestigious ISO 50001:2018 certification for its energy management systems. The achievement marks a significant milestone for Bengaluru’s water supply network, placing it on par with global standards.
The certification has been awarded by Bureau Veritas in recognition of the board’s efficient use of energy, particularly in its major Cauvery water pumping stations at T.K. Halli, Harohalli and Tataguni. These stations play a crucial role in pumping large volumes of water to the city, and maintaining energy efficiency at such scale has been a major operational challenge.
Officials said the certification validates the board’s systematic approach to energy conservation while ensuring uninterrupted water supply. The initiative not only reduces operational costs but also contributes to environmental sustainability.
A delegation led by BWSSB chairman Dr Ram Prasat Manohar met Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar and formally handed over the certificate. Speaking on the occasion, Shivakumar said the recognition reflects the success of the “Brand Bengaluru” vision and the government’s commitment to building sustainable urban infrastructure.
BWSSB chairman Manohar highlighted that the board has been consistently upgrading technology to deliver clean drinking water to every household. He credited engineers and technical teams for their efforts in achieving this milestone, stating that innovation and efficiency remain central to the board’s functioning.
Senior officials from the urban development department also lauded the transformation of the water utility, noting that such achievements enhance Bengaluru’s reputation as a forward-looking city.
This is the second major national-level recognition for BWSSB in recent times. Last year, the board had become the first in the country to receive certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards. With the addition of ISO 50001:2018, BWSSB has strengthened its position as a leader in both service quality and energy efficiency.
Experts believe the achievement will serve as a model for other water boards across India. It is also expected to play a key role in building a climate-resilient and sustainable water management system for Bengaluru in the coming years.
