BJP Protests: The controversy over Qur’an recitation at a recent public function in Hubballi’s Vishalanagara has taken on a political edge, with leaders from the BJP planning a symbolic purification ritual in front of the Dharwad Deputy Commissioner’s office today.
The incident unfolded during a felicitation ceremony held on October 5, where a cleric recited verses from the Qur’an at the start of the event. BJP immediately raised objections, questioning whether such religious activities were appropriate at an official function.
However, Congress leaders repeatedly clarified that the program was privately organized by Ward 34 municipal member Mangala Gauri and her son Nagaraj Gauri, and not a government event.
They argued that the government’s involvement was limited to the groundbreaking (guddali puja) for Hescom utility work, and that the Qur’an recitation had occurred solely during the subsequent private felicitation.
Opposition deputy leader Arvind Bellad, leading the BJP protest, announced that the party would conduct a “homa” (purification ritual) outside the DC office at 11 am. Bellad also claimed to have written to the Chief Secretary about the issue, asserting that religious proceedings at public functions blur the lines between government and private activity.
Congress leaders have firmly rejected BJP’s charges, insisting the Qur’an recitation took place in the private segment, not the official ceremony, and that objections are politically motivated. As the dispute unfolds, the BJP’s ritual protest is expected to escalate tensions, with attention focused on how authorities will respond and what future steps may be taken in the politically charged environment.
The controversy has prompted widespread debate regarding the separation of government and religious practices, while citizens wait to see the outcome of the protests and official responses.
