ABVP protests against alleged anti-national programmes at Azim Premji University

Bengaluru ; The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has accused student groups SPARK and All India Students’ Association (AISA) of planning “anti-national” events at Azim Premji University in Sarjapur, Bengaluru. The ABVP alleged that the programmes encourage Kashmir separatism and disrespect Indian armed forces personnel, prompting them to stage a protest on campus.
According to reports, SPARK and AISA had scheduled events on February 26, 27, and 28. ABVP leaders claimed that these gatherings would portray soldiers in Kashmir negatively and promote separatist ideology. During the protest, police detained 21 ABVP members and registered an FIR, but they were later released on bail.
The ABVP has demanded that SPARK be banned and that the university issue a public apology. The student body has also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging that the university’s recognition be revoked and strict action taken against those involved in anti-national activities.
In its letter to the Home Minister, ABVP alleged that institutions like AISA and SPARK have a history of conducting programmes that discredit Indian soldiers and question the status of Kashmir as part of India. The letter states, “Through SPARK, AISA has organised events that label our armed forces as violators, propagate anti-national thought, and support radical movements. Such activities threaten India’s unity and integrity and must be banned immediately.”
ABVP leader Manikanta Kalasa said during the protest that SPARK members had previously made statements claiming “Kashmir is not part of India” and accused Indian soldiers of atrocities. He claimed the protest involved displaying the national flag and blackening a university board to condemn the institution’s alleged complicity. Kalasa alleged that some students on campus made obscene gestures toward the protesters and that security personnel attempted to block their demonstration.
The university has not issued a formal response to the allegations. Observers note that the incident has sparked a debate on campus freedom of expression, limits of dissent, and national integrity. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation as the scheduled events approach.
