Class 10 student gives birth to premature baby: Headmaster suspended

Class 10 student gave birth to a premature baby in a government school hostel, authorities have suspended the institute’s principal, Ajith Madkami, officials said. This incident took place in Odisha‘s Malkangiri. Hostel matron Suchitra Charchi has also been dismissed with immediate effect; Assistant nurse and midwife have also been suspended.

Officials said the student gave birth to a baby girl on Monday after returning to the hostel after appearing for the board examination. The headmistress of the school run by the ST and SC Development, Minorities and Backward Classes Welfare Department said, “Men are not allowed in the girl’s hostel. We don’t know how she got pregnant.”

The health worker should check all the students living in the hostel once a week. This incident shows that the health worker is not doing her job,” she said. The girl and her baby were first shifted to Chitrakonda sub-divisional hospital and Malkangiri district hospital.

Hospital sources revealed that the student gave birth to a premature baby only eight months into her pregnancy. A case has been registered under several sections of the POCSO Act and BNS, Chitrakonda Sub-Divisional Police Officer Pradosh Pradhan said.

The parents of the girl have learned from the school authorities how she was pregnant till the delivery of the baby girl. District Welfare Officer Srinivas Acharya said that it is possible that the girl was pregnant when she went home during the vacation. He said that the departmental inquiry has already started. The police interrogated the suspended man who impregnated the girl.
