Son-in-law stabs mother-in-law in Belagavi over video call dispute, arrested

Belagavi : In a shocking incident triggered by a trivial dispute, a man allegedly stabbed his mother-in-law after an argument over showing a newborn baby on a video call. The incident took place in Aladakatti village of Saundatti taluk in Belagavi district. The accused, identified as Aravind Gavali, has been arrested, while the injured woman, Mahadevi (45), is undergoing treatment in the ICU.

According to police sources, Aravind’s wife had delivered a baby two months ago and was staying at her parental home. Aravind reportedly subjected his wife to frequent mental harassment and insisted on daily video calls to see the baby. However, Mahadevi had objected to his repeated demands, advising him to limit calls to once a day as it was not feasible to remain available on the phone at all times.

This reportedly angered Aravind, who began verbally abusing his mother-in-law. Mahadevi, in turn, warned him not to visit her house if he continued his behaviour. Enraged by this, Aravind allegedly barged into her house and attacked her with a knife before fleeing the scene.

Mahadevi sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the BIMS Hospital in Belagavi, where she is currently being treated in the intensive care unit. Doctors have stated that her condition is critical but stable.

In a disturbing development, the accused allegedly posted a WhatsApp status after the attack, stating, “Today jail, tomorrow bail… I won’t spare you,” indicating his intent and lack of remorse.

Muragod police acted swiftly, tracked down the accused, and took him into custody. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway. Authorities have condemned the incident, calling it a grave act of violence stemming from domestic discord.
