Karunakaran (74) lived separately with his wife Padmavathi (70). His 4 children were settled in different parts of the city. That left the couple feeling lonely and depressed. Every now and then their children used to come and visit their parents. Neighbors told local media that quarrels between Karunakaran and his wife were common.

Karunakaran did not give the biryani he had brought to his wife around 8 pm on Monday night. Padmavati got angry because her husband was eating biryani alone without giving it to her. He also asked for biryani. A heated argument broke out between the two over the same issue and Karunakaran poured kerosene on his wife and set her on fire.

However, as the fire spreads, Padmavati embraces her husband. Then Karunakaran also caught fire. Neighbors heard loud screams and took the unconscious couple to the hospital. Doctors at the Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital (KMCH) said Padmavati had 65% burns and Karunakaran 50%. After seeing that their bodies were burnt, the couple tried to commit suicide.

However, he survived because the hospital doctors saw it. The truth about what happened there after Padmavati regained consciousness on Tuesday has been revealed. She died within a couple of hours of telling the police about the incident. Her husband Karunakaran died on Wednesday morning.
