International cricket captains urge Pakistan to ensure humane treatment for Imran Khan
Mumbai: A group of former international cricket captains, led by Indian icons Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, have formally appealed to the Government of Pakistan to ensure fair and humane treatment for jailed former Prime Minister and 1992 World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan.
The appeal, reportedly co-signed by Australian great Greg Chappell and several other former captains, has been addressed to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The signatories emphasised that their intervention transcends the traditional India-Pakistan rivalry and is rooted in “sportsmanship and common humanity,” rather than political alignment.
In a joint statement, the former captains expressed “deep concern” over reports regarding Khan’s health and prison conditions. They noted that Imran Khan’s contributions to cricket are universally acknowledged, particularly his leadership in guiding Pakistan to victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup.
The victory, they said, inspired generations across borders and symbolised resilience, leadership and sporting excellence. “Many of us competed against him, shared the field with him, or grew up admiring his all-round brilliance and competitive spirit. He remains one of the finest all-rounders and leaders the game has seen,” the statement read.
Beyond cricket, the signatories acknowledged Khan’s tenure as Pakistan’s democratically elected Prime Minister, stating that regardless of political perspectives, he held the nation’s highest office and deserves dignity and basic human consideration.
The group has urged Pakistani authorities to ensure immediate, adequate and continuous medical care by qualified specialists of Khan’s choice, citing reports of deteriorating health, including concerns about his vision.
They have also called for humane detention conditions in line with international standards, regular access to close family members, and fair and transparent legal proceedings without undue delay.
The letter underscores cricket’s historic role as a bridge between nations, noting that while teams compete fiercely on the field, mutual respect defines the spirit of the game. “By upholding the principles of civility and justice, authorities can honour the values Imran Khan represented throughout his career,” the appeal stated.
Meanwhile, former Pakistan cricketers Wasim Akram and Shoaib Akhtar have also publicly urged authorities to ensure that Khan receives the best possible medical care amid growing concerns about his health.
