The revised rule has come into effect immediately, allowing customers to book another refill just 25 days after their previous booking. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued official instructions to oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL), to implement the revised booking policy without delay.
In March 2026, the conflict between Iran and the United States, along with disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, affected global energy supplies. To prevent hoarding and misuse of LPG cylinders during the supply crisis, the government introduced stricter booking rules.
At that time, the minimum gap between LPG refill bookings was fixed at 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas. While the move helped regulate supply, it caused significant inconvenience for rural households, particularly beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, who often depended on timely LPG refills.
However, with the country’s LPG supply situation now returning to normal and the backlog of refill requests reducing considerably, the government has decided to relax the restrictions for rural consumers.
Uniform 25-Day Rule Across India:
Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi announced that there will no longer be any distinction between urban and rural consumers.
“From now on, domestic LPG consumers across the country, whether in urban or rural areas, will be eligible to book another LPG cylinder after just 25 days,” the minister said.
The revised policy is expected to provide significant relief to millions of rural households, especially low- and middle-income families, by ensuring quicker access to cooking gas and reducing the hardship caused by longer waiting periods.
