LPG Biometric: Government issued new rules for LPG customers
The ministry has confirmed that the mandatory e-KYC (Biometric Aadhaar Authentication) is not required for all customers, but is specifically targeted toward those whose records remain unverified.
LPG Biometric: The Government of India (Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas) issued a formal clarification today, March 17, 2026, to address widespread confusion regarding Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) biometric authentication.
The ministry has confirmed that the mandatory e-KYC (Biometric Aadhaar Authentication) is not required for all customers, but is specifically targeted toward those whose records remain unverified.
Key Clarifications from the Ministry:
The government highlighted several points to ease consumer concerns following reports of panic-buying and long queues at gas agencies:
Who Needs It: The requirement applies only to unauthenticated LPG customers who have not completed e-KYC so far.
Existing Authenticated Customers: If you are a non-Ujjwala (PMUY) customer and have already completed your Aadhaar authentication in the past, you do not need to do it again.
Ujjwala (PMUY) Beneficiaries: These customers are required to complete biometric authentication once every financial year. This is specifically to ensure they continue receiving the ₹300 targeted subsidy after their 7th refill (i.e., for the 8th and 9th refills).
No Impact on Supply: The ministry explicitly stated that the supply of LPG refills will not be affected under any circumstances, regardless of e-KYC status.
How to Complete e-KYC from Home:
If you do need to complete your verification, you can avoid visiting a distributor by using your smartphone for free:
Download Two Apps: You need your provider’s app (IndianOil One, Hello BPCL, or HP Pay) and the UIDAI’s Aadhaar FaceRD app.
Log In: Use your registered mobile number or Consumer ID.
Face Authentication: Select the “e-KYC” or “Aadhaar Authentication” option. The app will use the FaceRD tool to scan your face via the camera.
Confirmation: Once the scan is successful, the status is usually updated within 24–48 hours.
