Health cover extended to daily wage workers in Karnataka

Bengaluru: In a significant welfare measure aimed at strengthening social security for vulnerable sections of the workforce, the Karnataka government has issued an   order extending cashless health insurance coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh to eligible daily wage workers and their dependents across various departments.

Earlier, under a government order dated June 24, 2025, the scheme had been implemented for nearly three lakh contract, outsourced, and honorarium-based employees working in different state departments. However, daily wage workers were not included in the initial phase, leading to growing demands from labour groups for equal access to healthcare benefits.

Responding to these concerns, the Karnataka State Government Daily Wage Employees Welfare Association had submitted a formal representation seeking inclusion in the scheme. Taking note of this demand, the state government has now decided to expand the coverage, with the objective of ensuring health security for all categories of temporary workers.

As per the  order issued by the Health and Family Welfare Department on March 31, 2026, eligible daily wage employees and their family members will now be entitled to receive cashless treatment up to Rs 5 lakh annually at empanelled hospitals. The move brings parity among various categories of non-permanent workers who form a crucial part of the state’s workforce.

Officials said the scheme will benefit thousands of families who often struggle to meet healthcare expenses during emergencies. With rising medical costs, lack of insurance coverage had left many daily wage earners financially vulnerable, forcing them to either delay treatment or fall into debt.

The government’s decision is being seen as a step toward inclusive governance, particularly in extending welfare benefits to those working in precarious employment conditions. By including daily wage workers under the health scheme, the state aims to reduce out-of-pocket expenditure and improve access to quality healthcare.

Labour representatives have welcomed the move, stating that it addresses a long-pending demand and provides much-needed relief to economically weaker sections. They, however, urged the government to ensure seamless implementation and awareness so that all eligible beneficiaries can avail the benefits without hurdles.
