Gmail Introduces Major Update Allowing Users to Change Their Old Email ID to a Custom Username

Google rolls out a long-awaited Gmail update enabling users to modify their decades-old email ID, retain old address functionality, and choose a preferred username securely across all Google services

After years of anticipation, Gmail has introduced its most significant update yet, allowing users to change their old Gmail ID without creating a new account. Launched in 2004, many Gmail users have relied on their original addresses for decades. With this update, they can now select a personalized username before @gmail.com while keeping the old email active for receiving messages.

This update brings a major relief for those who have felt restricted by their legacy Gmail addresses. Users can now update their usernames across Google Drive, Google Photos, Calendar, and other services seamlessly. The change does not affect existing emails or account data, ensuring all content remains safe and intact. Gmail has confirmed these details in an official blog post.

Under the new system, users can retain their old Gmail ID as an alternate address. Emails sent to the previous address will continue to be delivered normally, preventing any disruption for contacts or ongoing communications. Logging in with the old address will also remain possible, giving users flexibility and continuity while updating their professional or personal email identity.

There are limits to username changes. Users can update their Gmail username only once per year, and a maximum of three times overall. After the third change, no further modifications will be allowed. This feature is particularly useful for professionals seeking a more polished or business-appropriate email address.

Changing your Gmail username is straightforward. Users need to sign in to their Gmail account, navigate to Personal Info, and select Change Google Account Email. After entering the desired username, Gmail will check availability. Once confirmed, clicking Change Email and confirming the action will apply the new address. Google notes that some services like Chromebook or Remote Desktop may require minor adjustments after the username change.

With this update, Gmail finally addresses one of its users’ most requested features, offering freedom, flexibility, and enhanced personalization while maintaining all legacy functionalities intact.
