Belagavi farmer’s biofloc fish farming earns national praise in Mann Ki Baat

Belagavi : A progressive farmer from Bodakyanatti village in Belagavi taluk has brought pride to Karnataka after his success story in fish farming was highlighted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the popular radio programme Mann Ki Baat. Shivlingappa Satappa Huddar, who adopted innovative aquaculture practices, has emerged as a role model for farmers seeking alternative income sources.

Shivlingappa, along with his son Raju, has been practicing fish farming for the past three years using biofloc technology on a one-acre plot. This modern technique allows high-density fish production with minimal water usage, making it both cost-effective and sustainable. The family has constructed four farm ponds and primarily rears murrel (kuchchu) fish, which has strong market demand.

The venture required an initial investment of over ₹30 lakh. Fish seedlings are sourced from Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, and each production cycle takes about seven to eight months. Buyers directly visit the farm, ensuring better profits by eliminating middlemen. The farmer changes pond water every 15 days to maintain quality and ensure healthy growth.

The results have been impressive. Shivlingappa earned nearly ₹25 lakh from the first batch and around ₹22 lakh from the second, showcasing the profitability of scientific fish farming. His success caught the attention of the Prime Minister, who praised his efforts and encouraged farmers nationwide to adopt innovative practices.

Expressing his happiness, Shivlingappa said being mentioned by the Prime Minister brought him more joy than earning lakhs. “This recognition is a proud moment for our family. Our hard work has finally paid off,” he said, crediting his sons for their support.

Raju Huddar also expressed gratitude, stating that the family never expected such national recognition. He thanked the fisheries department for guiding them in adopting biofloc technology effectively. Since the broadcast, the family has been receiving congratulatory messages from across the state.

Prime Minister Modi, during the programme, emphasized that diversification and innovation in agriculture can significantly boost farmers’ income and strengthen the nation’s economy. The story of Shivlingappa Huddar stands as an example of how modern techniques can transform rural livelihoods.

With growing attention on sustainable farming, biofloc fish farming is emerging as a promising avenue for Indian farmers. Shivlingappa’s journey highlights the potential of combining traditional knowledge with modern science to achieve success.
