Mahua Moitra files FIR over ‘fabricated’ chat leaks with Prashant Kishor
New Delhi: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra has filed an FIR against several social media accounts for allegedly sharing and reposting what she termed as “fabricated and distorted” chat messages purportedly between her and political strategist Prashant Kishor.
The controversy erupted after screenshots of alleged private conversations between Moitra and Kishor began circulating widely on social media platforms. The chats were claimed to have been leaked from an iCloud account bearing the address prashantkishor@icloud.com.
However, Moitra has strongly denied their authenticity and described them as fake and maliciously created. Taking serious note of the issue, the TMC leader lodged a formal police complaint on Thursday against multiple X (formerly Twitter) handles that circulated the unverified content.
In her complaint, she accused the accounts of spreading misinformation with the intent to defame her. Moitra also issued a stern warning that legal action would be taken against anyone spreading or commenting on the alleged chats. “These are completely fabricated conversations.
I will pursue criminal proceedings against those responsible for creating and sharing this fake material,” she stated. The incident has once again raised concerns over the rapid spread of unverified information on social media and the misuse of digital platforms to target public figures.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also reacted sharply to the issue, stating that those involved in sharing fake and objectionable content would face FIRs and criminal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In a post on X, he warned that strict action would be taken against individuals propagating false narratives.
Moitra further shared screenshots of some of the X accounts against whom FIRs have been registered. “These are some of the handles against whom complaints have been filed. Anyone else reposting or spreading this fake news will also face criminal cases,” she wrote.
The source of the leaked chats remains unknown, and it is yet to be established who first created or circulated the screenshots. Cyber experts have pointed out that such content can be easily manipulated using digital tools, making verification crucial before sharing.
The development has triggered a fresh debate on privacy violations, online misinformation, and the need for stricter regulation of social media platforms. Police have begun investigating the matter, and further action is expected in the coming days.
