BJP and Congress Defections in Thrissur: 8 Congress Councillors Resign and Join BJP Alliance
Kerala: A significant political development unfolded in Thrissur, Kerala, when eight Congress councillors resigned from their party and joined hands with the BJP to elect independent candidate Tessi Jose Kallarakkal as the President of the Mattathur Panchayat on Saturday.
In the local elections, UDF won eight of the 24 wards, LDF secured ten, and NDA bagged four, with two independents also making their way into the council. Despite the LDF’s candidate, Ausef, being put forward for the presidency by independent members of the front, the UDF supported another independent candidate, Tessi Jose.
The election for the Panchayat President saw Tessi emerging victorious with the support of eight UDF votes and three BJP votes. “We resigned from Congress because of internal issues at the district and block leadership levels.
Problems started right from the candidate selection phase and worsened after the results were announced. We hope the district leadership will intervene and resolve these issues,” said Linto Palliparambil, one of the Congress members who resigned.
Meanwhile, in retaliation to organizational decisions made against him, KPCC President Sonny Joseph has expelled DCC General Secretary T.M. Chandran and Mandal President Shafi Kalluparambil from the party.
