Congress MLA urges strict action against Bangladesh, similar to Pakistan
Guwahati: Kamalakhya De Purkayastha, Congress MLA from Karimganj, has raised serious concerns over the rising influence of Islamic fundamentalism in Bangladesh, attributing it to the policies of the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus.
Speaking to the media, Purkayastha called for equally stringent measures against Bangladesh as taken against Pakistan to ensure regional security. The MLA highlighted recent attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh, expressing outrage over incidents such as the killing of Deepu Chandra Das and his associates in Maimensingh.
“The surge in Islamic fundamentalist activity in Bangladesh is a direct consequence of Mohammad Yunus’ leadership and the interim government’s inaction,” Purkayastha said.
Referencing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s recent statements, Purkayastha emphasized that Yunus’ administration has been allegedly granting cabinet-level positions to extremist elements, releasing convicted terrorists from prison, and allowing groups with links to international terror organizations to operate publicly.
According to Hasina, Yunus lacks political and administrative experience and is being manipulated by fundamentalist factions to present a benign image to the international community.
Sheikh Hasina’s statements underline the gravity of the situation. “This is not just a concern for India; it is a warning for all South Asian nations seeking peace. Bangladesh’s historically secular political foundations are being compromised at the behest of extremist actors, and we cannot allow our shared regional stability to be undermined,” Hasina remarked.
Purkayastha further criticized statements from certain Bangladeshi leaders referencing strategic areas like the Siliguri Corridor or the ‘Chicken Neck,’ calling such remarks irresponsible and dangerous. He noted that these threats jeopardize trade, transport, and regional stability, and stressed that leaders of a neighboring nation cannot be permitted to intimidate based on extremist ideologies.
Highlighting the importance of constitutional governance, Purkayastha conveyed Hasina’s faith in Bangladesh’s constitutional institutions and judiciary. “While there may be temporary setbacks, once constitutional norms are reinforced and judicial independence restored, justice will prevail,” he said.
The Congress leader urged both national and regional authorities to closely monitor the situation in Bangladesh and take diplomatic and strategic measures to counter the growing influence of extremist networks. With elections and political realignments on the horizon in Bangladesh, Purkayastha emphasized that proactive vigilance is essential to safeguard both minority communities and cross-border peace.
The MLA’s comments come amid mounting regional concerns regarding Bangladesh’s internal political dynamics and the potential spillover effects on India’s northeastern states.
