Karachi: Pakistan’s military spokesperson has triggered a major controversy after allegedly winking at a woman journalist during a press conference, a moment that has gone viral and sparked widespread outrage across social media.
Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), was addressing the media when the incident occurred. The video shows him responding to a question related to former Prime Minister Imran Khan, during which he briefly makes a winking gesture toward the journalist.
The clip has since been widely circulated, drawing sharp criticism from citizens, journalists, and political commentators.
Social media users have accused the military spokesperson of displaying unprofessional behaviour while wearing the Army uniform. Many questioned how a high-ranking officer entrusted with national security communication could act in such a manner in an official briefing.
Critics described the gesture as “undignified” and “unbecoming of a professional soldier,” arguing that it sends a wrong message about the conduct expected from top military officials.
Some users demanded accountability, asking whether the Army would take internal action against such conduct. “How can someone in uniform behave like this?” one user wrote, while another commented that his gesture “reflects poorly on the institution he represents.”
The controversy comes at a sensitive time in Pakistan’s political landscape, with tensions continuing between the military establishment and supporters of Imran Khan. Observers note that such incidents only add fuel to ongoing criticism of the Army’s political role.
As the video continues to circulate, neither ISPR nor Lt. Gen. Chaudhry has issued an official statement addressing the incident, leaving questions about protocol, professionalism, and public decorum unanswered.
