Police arrest absconding accused in 2006 Sukananda Shetty murder case after 19 years

Sukananda Shetty Murder Case: The police have arrested an absconding accused, identified as Abdul Salam Addur (47), who was wanted for his alleged involvement in the 2006 Sukananda Shetty murder case in Mangaluru.

Sukananda Shetty was a BJP leader and a sitting member of the Mulki town panchayat. He was murdered near Hosabettu in Surathkal on December 1, 2006.

Abdul Salam Addur was arrested nearly 19 years after the crime. He is accused of sheltering the key accused (Kabir) and his associates for two days after the murder, helping them evade arrest, and facilitating the main accused’s escape to Kasaragod, Kerala, from where he went into hiding.

Abdul Salam Addur obtained a passport in 2007 and lived abroad for several years before recently returning to India. He had been untraceable for nearly 19 years, failing to appear before the court despite multiple warrants.

So far, 16 accused have been arrested in the case, but 11 others (including Abdul Salam’s brother, Latheef alias Addur Latheef) are still absconding. Abdul Salam Addur also faces a separate attempted murder case in the Bajpe police station and has a rowdy sheet opened against him. The arrest was made in the Kinnipadavu area, where he was living in a rented house.
