SIR Effect: Significant Increase in Muslim Women’s Voter Turnout in Bihar’s First Phase of Elections

SIR Effect: In a notable turn of events during the first phase of the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, there has been a significant increase in voter turnout among Muslim women. Political analysts suggest that this surge is a direct result of the Special Intense Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls.

Many Muslim women from the community have returned to Bihar from other states to ensure their names remain on the voter list and to exercise their right to vote. There is a palpable concern among them that prolonged absence from the state could lead to their names being deleted from the electoral rolls or transferred elsewhere.

Various voters have reported applying to transfer their names from voter lists in other states or have requested deletions to register in Bihar. According to a political analyst from Patna, the increase in voter turnout following the SIR process reflects a growing awareness among the electorate.

Sabina Khatun, 45, traveled from Nashik in Maharashtra to cast her vote alongside her mother Rubiya (57) and daughter Baby (20) in Patna. She stated, “The SIR process made us aware of the importance of ensuring our names are not deleted.

In our locality, Fulpur Sharif, more than two dozen Muslim women from places like Gujarat, Kolkata, and Mumbai have returned just to vote. No Indian should lose the chance to participate in elections.”

Compared to the 2020 Assembly elections, this time around, a notable increase in Muslim women voters has been observed in areas with a Muslim majority. MD Nakeeb, a social activist from Sahibganj in Muzaffarpur, noted that even larger numbers of Muslim women in rural areas are participating in the voting process.

He added that through the SIR initiative, awareness has not only grown among women from minority communities about voting but also regarding obtaining essential documents for their children, such as birth certificates.
