Shivamogga: A 21-year-old college student was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Post-Matric Girls Hostel in Shivamogga on Tuesday morning, sending shockwaves through the district. The deceased has been identified as Vanisha (21), a final-year BSc student at DVS College in Shivamogga.
According to preliminary reports, Vanisha had gone to the terrace of the government-run hostel around the time she usually left for college, after having breakfast. Moments later, other hostel inmates found her hanging near the water tank. The incident came to light when a few students went to the terrace to dry clothes and saw her body hanging.
The tragic discovery has raised several suspicions among fellow students and her family. Her parents, who arrived from a nearby village, said Vanisha had spoken to her mother the previous night and had promised to visit home the next morning. “She was happy and had no major problems. We cannot believe she would end her life like this,” said her grief-stricken mother.
Family members alleged that Vanisha was humiliated by the hostel warden, Swapna, in front of other students over the past two days. “She was scolded in front of everyone and was deeply hurt. That humiliation might have driven her to this extreme step,” claimed her uncle Manjunath, demanding a thorough investigation.
Adding to the controversy, the warden reportedly called Vanisha’s family after her death, saying she had taken some pills and asked them to come quickly. However, relatives questioned why she hid the fact that Vanisha had hanged herself, calling it an attempt to cover up the truth.
Officials from the Department of Social Welfare, including Officer Suresh, visited the hostel and conducted an inquiry. The Shivamogga Fort Police have registered a case and begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
Vanisha was known as a bright and hardworking student who pursued higher education despite her family’s poor financial condition. Her untimely death has not only devastated her family but also sparked outrage among students demanding justice and accountability.
