Belagavi: What began as a vibrant celebration of Kannada Rajyotsava in the border district of Belagavi turned violent when five people were stabbed during the day-long procession. The incident has led to the arrest of two brothers, Arun Kurubar and Kiran Kurubar, by Market Police on charges of attempted murder.
According to police sources, the attack was allegedly triggered by personal animosity. The victim, Aditya Bendigeri from KK Kopp village, was accused of harassing the sister of the accused. During the rally near the DC office, the brothers reportedly confronted Aditya and stabbed him before fleeing the scene. Aditya is currently undergoing treatment at BIMS Hospital.
The Kannada Rajyotsava procession, which drew an estimated 300,000 to 400,000 participants, was organized to assert Kannada identity in the face of MES (Maharashtra Ekikaran Samiti) provocations. However, the event was marred by violence as miscreants used the occasion to settle old scores.
In addition to the stabbing, a separate gang reportedly stole over 300 mobile phones during the crowded festivities, adding to the chaos and public concern. Police have launched investigations into both incidents, which have now become major law and order challenges.
Home Minister and senior officials are expected to review the situation, as tensions between pro-Kannada groups and MES activists continue to simmer in the region.
