Social media has become deeply embedded in people’s lives, but misuse of these platforms continues to rise unchecked. According to Bengaluru Police, crimes related to objectionable posts, online abuse, and fraud have increased by 21% compared to last year.
In the last nine months alone, 953 cases have been registered, up from 784 cases in 2024. Police have already blocked 50 accounts responsible for over 300 offensive posts. Most of the accused are young men and women, officials said.
Incidents include defamatory comments against actress Ramya, online abuse targeting actor Darshan’s wife Vijayalakshmi, and offensive remarks about Chief Justice DY Chandrachud following the recent shoe-throwing incident against CJI Gavai.
Authorities say that the race for “likes” and “shares” is driving many youngsters towards online crime. Cases of fraud, threats, fake posts, and provocative comments have become common.
To curb this growing menace, Bengaluru Police are setting up a dedicated Cyber Command Center to monitor and act swiftly against social media offences. Officials have warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone involved in online abuse or cyber fraud, urging citizens to use social media responsibly.
