Key Points from the RBI’s Latest Notification:
The most crucial point is that the Rs 2,000 banknotes continue to be legal tender. This means they are still a valid form of currency for transactions.
According to the latest data released by the RBI, as of August 31, 2025, over 98.33% of the Rs 2,000 banknotes in circulation as of May 19, 2023, have been returned to the banking system.
However, a value of Rs 5,956 crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes is still in circulation. The RBI continues to encourage the public to return these notes.

Where and How to Exchange/Deposit Notes:
While the initial deadline for exchange at bank branches has passed, the RBI has kept the facility open for the public. The changes have shifted the point of exchange:
The facility to exchange or deposit Rs 2,000 notes is available at the 19 designated Issue Offices of the RBI.
Individuals can also send Rs 2,000 banknotes via Indian Post from any post office to any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices for credit to their bank accounts.

The RBI’s actions are part of its “Clean Note Policy,” aiming to ensure a steady supply of good quality banknotes in the economy. The central bank had previously stopped printing the Rs 2,000 notes in 2018-19, as the initial objective of introducing them (to quickly replenish currency after demonetization) had been fulfilled.
