WhatsApp Introduces New Parental Controls for Teen Users: Key Features Explained

According to Meta, WhatsApp's parent company, these tools are designed to help parents manage their teenagers' privacy settings and stay informed about certain account activities—without giving them access to private chats.

Amid growing concerns over children’s online safety and increasing pressure from governments on technology companies to strengthen digital protections, WhatsApp has introduced a new set of parental control features for teenage users.

According to Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, these tools are designed to help parents manage their teenagers’ privacy settings and stay informed about certain account activities—without giving them access to private chats.

Under the new features, parents will receive notifications whenever their teenage child joins or leaves a WhatsApp group. They will also be alerted if there is a sudden and significant increase in the number of members in a group their teen is part of.

However, parents will not be able to read their child’s personal messages. Meta has clarified that WhatsApp’s messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption, meaning neither WhatsApp nor parents can access the content of private conversations.

Parents will also be able to manage several important privacy settings, including who can view their teenager’s profile photo, who can add them to WhatsApp groups, and who can see their status updates. If a teenager attempts to make these privacy settings less restrictive, they will be required to enter a parental PIN set by their parents.

In addition, parents can control access to WhatsApp Channels, the feature used by public figures, organizations, and creators to share updates. They can choose to allow all channels, approve only selected channels, or block the feature entirely.

WhatsApp has also introduced a “Limited” setting for Meta AI, enabling parents to restrict the types of topics teenagers can discuss with the AI assistant, providing an additional layer of online safety.

These new parental control features are entirely optional and are intended to be configured jointly by parents and their teenagers. Meta says the goal is to encourage open conversations between parents and children about online safety, privacy, and responsible digital behavior.

The features are currently being rolled out in phases and will become available to users gradually. WhatsApp has also confirmed that the minimum age requirement to use the platform will remain 13 years.
