India Approves 13186 New MBBS Seats With 1650 Added in Karnataka

Karnataka is set to receive a significant addition to its medical education capacity, with 1650 new MBBS seats approved for the 2026 to 2027 academic year. The development comes as the central government moves to expand undergraduate medical education across the country.

A total of 13186 new MBBS seats have been approved nationally for the upcoming academic session. With the latest addition, the number of MBBS seats across India is expected to rise to around 140214, according to the figures cited in the announcement.

The increase is particularly important for Karnataka, where medical education has a strong presence. With the addition of 1650 seats, the states total MBBS capacity is expected to reach 15745.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi shared details of the development on his official social media account. He said the expansion reflects the governments efforts to increase medical education capacity and strengthen the healthcare system.

Every year, lakhs of candidates appear for the NEET examination hoping to secure a place in medical colleges.
