Karnataka Air Quality Remains Good Across Major Cities

Karnataka is seeing a welcome improvement in air quality, with several major cities recording readings in the good category on September 28. Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi Dharwad and Belagavi are among the cities reporting relatively clean air.

Bengaluru has recorded an AQI in the range of 37 to 45, placing the city within the good category. Recent rainfall and changing weather conditions appear to have helped keep dust and other pollutants under control.

The improvement comes as a relief for Bengaluru residents, particularly after periods when traffic, construction activity and dry conditions can contribute to higher pollution levels. The current weather has also remained favorable, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting partly cloudy conditions in Bengaluru on September 28.

Mysuru has recorded an AQI of around 32, while Mangaluru has reported a reading of 28. Hubballi Dharwad stands at around 42 and Belagavi at about 38. Based on these figures, all five cities remain within the good category.

The AQI scale used by the Central Pollution Control Board places readings between 0 and 50 in the good category. At this level, the possible health impact is considered minimal for the general population.

For Bengaluru, the recent rain has played an important role in improving the atmosphere. Rain can help remove some suspended particles from the air, although air quality can change again depending on traffic movement, wind conditions, construction activity and further weather changes.

The current situation is therefore not a reason to assume that pollution will remain low permanently. AQI can vary from one location to another within the same city, depending on local traffic, road dust, construction and other sources.

Mangaluru is currently showing the lowest AQI among the cities listed, with a reading of around 28. The coastal location and prevailing weather conditions can influence the movement and dispersion of pollutants.

Mysuru is also reporting clean air with an AQI of 32. The city has remained in the good range, providing relatively comfortable conditions for routine outdoor activities.

Hubballi Dharwad and Belagavi are recording AQI levels of around 42 and 38 respectively. Both readings remain below the CPCB threshold of 50 for the good category.

For residents, the current readings indicate that normal outdoor activities can generally continue. However, people who already have respiratory or other health conditions should continue to pay attention to changes in local air quality rather than relying only on the citywide average.

Children and older adults can also be more sensitive when pollution levels rise. While the current readings are in the good range, conditions can change when rainfall decreases, traffic increases or weather becomes stagnant.

The recent weather pattern has also helped keep Karnataka’s atmosphere relatively comfortable. The IMD forecast for Bengaluru shows generally cloudy conditions and light rain around the period, with no warning issued for September 28.

Another point worth remembering is that an AQI figure represents conditions measured at particular monitoring locations. Pollution can still be higher near busy roads, industrial areas or construction sites even when the overall city reading remains good.

For Bengaluru residents, the present readings offer a positive change after periods of concern over dust and urban pollution. Cleaner air can make morning walks and other outdoor activities more comfortable, provided local conditions remain favorable.

The situation will need to be monitored over the coming days because weather conditions are expected to change. IMD forecasts indicate further cloudy weather and rain possibilities across parts of Karnataka later in the week.
