Siddaramaiah Rajanna Meeting Sparks Fresh AHINDA Discussion

Former Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah’s visit to Tumakuru on Friday has drawn attention after he had lunch at the residence of former minister K N Rajanna. What was described as a personal meeting has since become a subject of discussion within Karnataka’s political circles.

The meeting came shortly after Rajanna faced a setback in the Karnataka State Cooperative Apex Bank leadership issue. MLC S Ravi was elected unopposed as the bank’s president for the first two and a half years, while Sharanagouda Patil Bayyapur was chosen as vice president. Rajanna had been considered a prominent contender for the position.

According to reports, Siddaramaiah and Rajanna spent time discussing political developments during the visit. The conversation has attracted attention because of Rajanna’s recent political developments and Siddaramaiah’s continuing involvement in discussions surrounding backward class politics in Karnataka.

The possibility of reviving AHINDA activities has also emerged as one of the topics being discussed in connection with the meeting. AHINDA is associated with the political mobilisation of minorities, backward classes and Dalits and has been closely linked with Siddaramaiah’s political career.

However, there has been no formal announcement from Siddaramaiah about restarting an AHINDA organisation following the Tumakuru meeting. Reports about the discussion should therefore be treated as political developments and speculation rather than as a confirmed organisational decision.

The timing of the meeting has added to the interest. Siddaramaiah was in Tumakuru for public engagements, including the launch of a book on the literary works of late artist P R Thippeswamy and the inauguration of a private hospital. The New Indian Express reported that both programmes were connected with the Kuruba community.

Rajanna’s political position has also remained under attention since the Apex Bank episode. Before the selection of S Ravi, the contest for the chairman’s post had generated considerable discussion within the Congress, with Rajanna emerging as a major contender. Reports at the time described the contest as part of wider differences between groups supporting Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

The Apex Bank issue was eventually settled without a contested election. According to The New Indian Express, Rajanna did not file his nomination papers, while Ravi was elected unanimously with support from the designated directors.

That development has made Rajanna’s meeting with Siddaramaiah particularly noteworthy. Political observers are watching whether the two leaders’ discussions lead to any public political initiative or remain limited to an informal exchange.

There has also been renewed attention on Siddaramaiah’s relationship with AHINDA politics. A recent backward class gathering in Bengaluru had already triggered speculation about the future direction of the social coalition associated with him. The Economic Times reported that the absence of several leaders from the gathering had led to discussion about possible changes within the group.

The latest Tumakuru meeting has added another layer to those discussions. At present, there is no confirmed announcement that Siddaramaiah has decided to formally revive an AHINDA organisation. Any future move would depend on political circumstances and decisions by the leaders involved.

Rajanna has also remained vocal about his political future after the Apex Bank development. Recent reports said he indicated that he could contest a Lok Sabha election from Madhugiri if delimitation results in the creation of the constituency he referred to.

For now, the lunch meeting has become significant mainly because of its timing. Siddaramaiah’s visit followed the Apex Bank episode involving Rajanna, while wider discussions about AHINDA politics are already taking place in Karnataka.

The coming weeks may provide more clarity on whether the Tumakuru discussion was simply a meeting between senior Congress leaders or whether it becomes part of a broader political conversation. Until any formal statement is made, the reported discussions about AHINDA and Rajanna’s political future remain matters of political speculation.
