Karnataka Bandh on August 13: What’s open and What’s Close Tomorrow?

Bengaluru: Karnataka is unlikely to witness major disruptions on Thursday, August 13, despite a statewide Karnataka Bandh called by several Kannada organisations over the ongoing Cauvery water-sharing dispute with Tamil Nadu. While protests are expected across parts of the state, essential services are likely to function as usual.

Why Has the Karnataka Bandh Been Called?

The bandh has been announced in protest against the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) directive asking Karnataka to release 12,000 cusecs of water per day to Tamil Nadu for 15 days, beginning August 12.

Kannada organisations and farmer groups have strongly opposed the order, arguing that Karnataka cannot afford to release water due to its own water requirements. Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj, convener of the Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha, has confirmed that the bandh will go ahead as planned.

“The bandh will be observed at any cost. I appeal to everyone to support the statewide protest,” Vatal Nagaraj said. Meanwhile, the Mandya District Farmers’ Welfare Protection Committee has also announced demonstrations near the Visvesvaraya statue in Mandya, urging farmers, Kannada organisations, workers, women, and the general public to participate in the protest.

Farmer leaders have maintained that Karnataka should not release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu under the present circumstances, describing the CWMA’s order as a serious threat to the state’s water security.

Will Schools Remain Open?

Schools across Karnataka are expected to remain open on August 13. According to the Karnataka Associated Managements of Schools (KAMS), educational institutions will continue normal classes after withdrawing an earlier appeal to shut schools, citing concerns over the academic calendar.

However, KAMS has extended moral support to the bandh. School managements, teachers, and non-teaching staff have been requested to wear black ribbons or black badges as a mark of solidarity.

Will Banks, Hospitals and Public Transport Be Open?

Essential services are expected to operate normally throughout the bandh, which is scheduled from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Other emergency and essential services

However, commuters are advised to check local updates before travelling, as protests in certain areas could temporarily affect traffic.

IT Companies May Allow Work from Home

Several IT companies, start-ups, and corporate offices in Bengaluru are closely monitoring the situation.

Some organisations may permit employees to work from home if transport disruptions or safety concerns arise due to protest-related roadblocks.

App-based delivery platforms and logistics services may also experience delays in areas affected by demonstrations.
