Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Set to Move Ahead After High Command Approval Swearing In Likely on Monday

After weeks of political uncertainty and intense discussions within the Congress leadership, the long delayed Karnataka cabinet expansion appears to have entered its final stage. Senior party leaders are understood to have received positive signals from the party high command, significantly increasing the possibility that new ministers could take oath early next week.

The latest development follows an important meeting in New Delhi where Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reportedly held detailed discussions with Karnataka’s top leadership regarding the pending cabinet expansion. During the meeting, the names of ministerial aspirants were reviewed and the leadership is expected to finalize the list after examining recommendations submitted by state leaders.

According to party sources, the final list of new ministers is likely to be prepared after consultations with senior Congress leaders. Once the process is completed, the approved names are expected to be communicated to the Karnataka leadership within the next couple of days. If the schedule proceeds as expected, the swearing in ceremony could take place on Monday.

The cabinet expansion has remained one of the most discussed political issues in Karnataka for several weeks. Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and several senior Congress leaders had stayed in New Delhi over the past few days to resolve the issue. Their visit was primarily aimed at securing a meeting with Rahul Gandhi and obtaining approval for the proposed cabinet reshuffle and expansion.

The high level meeting reportedly took place at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. Besides Rahul Gandhi, the discussions were attended by senior Congress functionaries including K C Venugopal, Karnataka in charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president B K Hariprasad.

One of the key highlights of the meeting was the submission of separate recommendation lists by the state’s top leaders. Reports indicate that Chief Minister D K Shivakumar handed over his preferred list of ministerial candidates, while Siddaramaiah also presented a separate list containing his recommendations. The party leadership is now expected to compare both lists along with its own internal assessments before taking a final decision.

Following the meeting, Rahul Gandhi is also believed to have held separate discussions with Mallikarjun Kharge, K C Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala regarding the final composition of the cabinet. B K Hariprasad was also reportedly called for an individual interaction, suggesting that consultations continued even after the primary meeting concluded.

Political observers believe that balancing regional representation, caste equations, administrative experience and organizational interests will remain key factors while selecting the new ministers. Interestingly, reports suggest that B K Hariprasad has been asked to remain in New Delhi until the final decision is announced. After receiving indications that the final list would be sent soon, Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah reportedly returned to Bengaluru on Thursday night aboard a special flight after spending several days in the national capital. Their return is being viewed as a sign that the decision making process has largely been completed at the central leadership level.

Several legislators who have been hoping for ministerial positions also returned to Bengaluru after their Delhi visit. Among those seen arriving were Nayana Motamma, Shivalingegowda, Shivaraj Tangadagi, Puttarangashetty and Vijayanand Kashappanavar. Many of them expressed optimism while interacting with the media but acknowledged that the final decision rests entirely with the party leadership.

Shivalingegowda expressed confidence that the ministerial list could be announced on Sunday and said preparations appeared to be underway for a swearing in ceremony on Monday. He also mentioned that the Governor is expected to be in Bengaluru over the weekend, a development that has further fueled speculation about the timing of the oath taking event.

Puttarangashetty also voiced hope that he might receive an opportunity in the expanded cabinet. He said he remained optimistic and was awaiting the official announcement from the Congress leadership.

Mohammed Nalapad Harris stated that he was confident his father N A Harris could be included in the cabinet. He clarified that his visit to New Delhi was intended to meet the Chief Minister and not to engage in lobbying for a ministerial berth.

Vijayanand Kashappanavar said that people from his constituency and community had strongly supported his candidature. He added that discussions had taken place at the party high command level and expressed confidence that positive news could emerge soon.

Government officials have reportedly been informed on multiple occasions about possible dates for the cabinet expansion, but the exercise was postponed repeatedly due to delays in securing final approval. With consultations now appearing to be complete, preparations for the swearing in ceremony are expected to gather pace if the final list is released over the weekend.
