Meta Introduces Parent Alert Feature to Detect Serious Teen AI Conversations

Meta has launched a new safety feature that can alert parents when supervised teenagers discuss self harm or suicide with Meta AI while also providing mental health guidance and support

Meta has announced a major safety update for its AI chatbot by introducing a new Parent Alert feature designed to help protect teenagers during sensitive conversations. The company says the feature is aimed at identifying situations where a young user may be discussing self harm or suicidal thoughts and could require immediate support.

As artificial intelligence becomes a common tool for students and teenagers seeking information, learning assistance and casual conversations, concerns about online safety and mental health have also increased. Meta’s latest update is intended to strengthen parental involvement without sending alerts for every conversation a teenager has with the AI.

According to the company, when a supervised teen chats with Meta AI and the system detects language that may indicate emotional distress or a mental health crisis, the chatbot will first encourage the user to seek help. It may recommend contacting a trusted adult such as a parent, guardian, teacher or counselor and also provide information about relevant support services and crisis helplines.

If the conversation appears to involve a higher level of risk, Meta says the interaction may undergo manual review before any notification is sent. Only after this review, and when necessary, will the supervising parent receive an alert through the parental supervision system. The company emphasized that parents will not receive notifications for every discussion, helping maintain a balance between privacy and safety.

Along with the notification, parents will receive expert developed guidance on how to approach sensitive conversations with their child. These resources are designed to help families respond calmly and supportively when discussing emotional wellbeing or mental health concerns.

The new Parent Alert feature is currently available for families using Instagram Parental Supervision in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. Meta has confirmed that it plans to expand the feature to additional countries before the end of the year.

This latest update builds on the existing safety tools already available through Meta Teen Accounts. These protections include restrictions on sensitive content, controls that limit messages from strangers, screen time management features and parental supervision options. The new alert system adds another layer of protection for families whose teenagers regularly interact with Meta AI.

Meta also revealed that it is exploring more advanced safety measures for the future. The company is developing systems that could potentially assist in notifying local emergency services if an extremely serious and immediate risk is identified. However, this capability is still under development and has not yet been introduced.

The announcement reflects the growing focus among technology companies on responsible AI use, especially for younger audiences. As AI powered chatbots become part of everyday digital life, companies are under increasing pressure to create tools that not only improve user experience but also help protect vulnerable users during critical moments.

With the Parent Alert feature, Meta aims to provide families with an additional safety net while encouraging early intervention and open communication whenever a teenager may be facing emotional or mental health challenges.
