Heavy monsoon rain has triggered another major landslide in Kerala’s Wayanad district, causing widespread destruction and raising fresh concerns in a region that has witnessed similar disasters in recent years. Dramatic videos showing rocks, mud and debris rushing downhill have spread rapidly across social media.
The landslide occurred near the Meenakshi Bridge, around five kilometres from the area that witnessed a devastating landslide two years ago. Eyewitnesses said a massive flow of mud and rocks swept across the road within seconds, carrying away several vehicles, including a tanker lorry, while also damaging nearby houses.
According to preliminary reports, at least four people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries in the incident. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the site soon after the disaster and launched search and rescue operations.
Officials said many of those affected were workers associated with the Wayanad–Kozhikode tunnel road project. However, the construction work had been suspended recently because of continuous rainfall, resulting in fewer workers being present at the site when the landslide occurred. Authorities believe this decision helped prevent a much larger tragedy.
As a precaution, residents living in vulnerable areas are being shifted to safer locations while rescue teams continue clearing debris and searching the affected zone.
Responding to the incident, Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan urged officials to ensure the immediate evacuation of residents and provide the best possible medical treatment to those injured. He also stated that district authorities and the disaster management department had reportedly instructed the removal of large soil heaps near the bridge construction site in June, but there are preliminary indications that the directions were not fully implemented by the project contractors.
