Tesla Expands India Lineup With New Model Y Premium RWD Variant

Tesla has introduced a new premium rear wheel drive version of the Model Y in India, offering improved features, strong driving range, fast charging capability, and enhanced cabin comfort.

Tesla has strengthened its presence in the Indian electric vehicle market by launching a new Premium Rear Wheel Drive variant of the Model Y. The newly introduced version replaces the earlier Long Range Premium RWD model and is priced at Rs 50.89 lakh ex showroom. With this addition, Tesla now offers two versions of the Model Y in India, including the Premium RWD and the higher specification Premium AWD model.

The latest variant is designed to appeal to buyers looking for a premium electric SUV with a balance of performance, comfort, and efficiency. While Tesla has not officially disclosed the battery capacity of the India specific version, international markets receive the rear wheel drive model with a 64 kWh battery pack paired with a rear mounted electric motor.

According to available reports, the new Model Y Premium RWD delivers a WLTP certified driving range of approximately 500 kilometers on a single charge. The electric SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of around 201 kmph, making it one of the quickest vehicles in its segment.

Charging performance remains one of the key highlights of the Model Y. Tesla claims that when connected to a compatible Supercharger, the vehicle can support DC fast charging speeds of up to 175 kW. Under ideal conditions, just 15 minutes of charging can provide enough energy for up to 238 kilometers of driving range, reducing downtime for long distance travel.

Inside the cabin, Tesla has equipped the new variant with a host of premium features. The SUV gets a large 16 inch central touchscreen that controls most vehicle functions, while rear passengers receive an additional 8 inch touchscreen for entertainment and convenience. Other notable features include a panoramic glass roof, ventilated front seats, wireless charging support, and power reclining and folding rear seats.

Tesla says the vehicle also offers impressive practicality. The maximum storage capacity is rated at 2,138 litres, making it suitable for families and buyers who require generous cargo space for travel and everyday use.

Recently, Tesla also launched the larger Model Y L in India at a starting price of Rs 61.99 lakh ex showroom. This long wheelbase version was first introduced in China and features three rows of seating with accommodation for six passengers. Built at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory, the Model Y L is aimed at customers seeking greater interior space and family friendly practicality.

The company claims the Model Y L offers a WLTP certified range of about 681 kilometers and can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in approximately five seconds. With the addition of the new Premium RWD variant, Tesla is expanding its portfolio in India and targeting a wider range of electric vehicle buyers looking for advanced technology, long range capability, and premium features.
