Peenya elevated corridor to remain shut for three days for safety checks

Bengaluru: In a major traffic advisory for commuters, authorities have announced a temporary closure of the Peenya Elevated Flyover from May 5 morning to May 8 late morning to carry out crucial load testing.

The flyover, also known as the Dr. Sri Shivakumara Swamiji Flyover, is a key arterial stretch along National Highway 4 and falls under the limits of the Peenya Traffic Police. Officials stated that recent repair works on structural cables have been completed, and a final load test is necessary to verify durability and safety standards.

Following a request from the National Highways Authority of India, the closure will be enforced from 5 am on May 5 until 11 am on May 8. During this period, movement of all vehicles—including heavy, light, and passenger vehicles—will be prohibited on the elevated stretch.

Full restriction on flyover stretch
Traffic will not be allowed between the Kennametal Vidya upper ramp and the SRS down ramp on both sides of the flyover. Authorities emphasised that the restriction is temporary but necessary to ensure long-term commuter safety.

Diversions in place
To ease congestion, traffic police have outlined alternate routes:

Nelmangala towards Bengaluru: Vehicles will be diverted near the Kennametal junction to the service road beneath NH-4, continuing via 8th Mile junction → Dasarahalli → Jalahalli Cross → SRS junction → Goraguntepalya.
CMTI towards Nelmangala: Commuters should take the service road via SRS junction → Jalahalli Cross → Dasarahalli → 8th Mile → Parle-G Toll area.
Officials warned that congestion is likely on service roads and junctions during peak hours and advised motorists to plan their travel accordingly or use alternative routes wherever possible.

The Peenya elevated corridor is widely used by industrial traffic, including heavy vehicles accessing key manufacturing hubs. Authorities said the load testing will help assess the strength of the repaired cables and overall structure, ensuring it can safely handle daily traffic volumes.

Commuters have been requested to cooperate with traffic personnel and strictly follow the diversions. The exercise, officials added, is part of preventive maintenance aimed at avoiding future disruptions or structural failures.
