As temperatures soar beyond 42 degrees in several parts of India, electric scooter owners are beginning to notice a worrying trend. Batteries are draining faster than usual and in some cases scooters are shutting down unexpectedly. Experts say this is not just a technical issue but a direct impact of extreme heat on lithium ion battery systems.

One of the biggest mistakes riders make during summer is charging their scooters under harsh daylight. High ambient temperatures combined with charging activity can stress battery cells and gradually reduce their lifespan. Specialists recommend charging only during cooler hours, preferably at night, when the surrounding temperature is stable and less damaging to the system.

Heat affects the internal chemistry of batteries more than most users realize. When temperatures rise, internal resistance increases, which leads to reduced range and slower performance. In extreme cases, the system may even shut down as a safety measure. Riders are advised to pay attention to warning alerts on their digital dashboards as these often signal early signs of overheating.

Experts also emphasize the importance of proper parking habits. Leaving an electric scooter under direct sunlight for long hours can significantly increase battery temperature even before usage begins. Parking in shaded areas or using protective covers can help maintain a stable internal environment and reduce unnecessary strain on the battery pack.

After long rides, it is equally important to allow the scooter to cool down before plugging it in for charging. Charging a hot battery can accelerate wear and may even trigger long term damage. In cities where temperatures are consistently high, avoiding fast chargers during peak heat hours is also considered a safer practice.

City level heat alerts further highlight the urgency of these precautions. For instance, cities like New Delhi, Ahmedabad and Prayagraj are experiencing peak temperatures between 44 and 46 degrees Celsius. In such conditions, charging during late night or early morning hours is recommended for better battery health and safety.

Maintaining proper tyre pressure, avoiding unnecessary load and keeping the vehicle cool are simple steps that help reduce battery stress.
