Abu Dhabi: In a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Gulf, Israel has reportedly deployed its iconic Iron Dome air defence system to the United Arab Emirates following a series of intense missile and drone attacks by Iran. The development marks a significant geopolitical shift and signals deepening military coordination between the two nations.

According to a report by Axios, Israeli officials confirmed that not just the Iron Dome batteries, but also trained military personnel have been dispatched to the UAE to operate and manage the sophisticated air defence system. This move comes amid sustained Iranian strikes targeting critical infrastructure in the Gulf nation.

Sources indicate that the UAE reached out to its allies after repeated attacks threatened both civilian and military installations. While the country’s existing defence systems managed to intercept a large number of incoming threats, several missiles and drones reportedly breached defences, causing damage and heightening security concerns.

The situation reportedly intensified after UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan directly contacted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, seeking urgent support. Following the call, Netanyahu is said to have immediately ordered the deployment of an Iron Dome battery along with dozens of defence personnel to Abu Dhabi.

This marks the first known instance of Israel exporting its Iron Dome system to another country for active operational use in a live conflict scenario. Previously, the system was primarily used within Israel and, in limited cases, by the United States.

The impact of the deployment has been significant. According to Israeli officials, the UAE’s reinforced air defence system has successfully intercepted dozens of Iranian missiles. The UAE Ministry of Defence has reported that Iran launched an unprecedented barrage of around 550 ballistic and cruise missiles, along with over 2,200 drones, targeting key locations across the country.

Abu Dhabi, identified as a primary target in the attacks, has particularly benefited from the enhanced defence shield.
