Tesla May Bring Extended Model Y Variant to India Amid Slow Sales
Tesla is reportedly preparing to launch a new long wheelbase version of Model Y in India aiming to boost demand despite high pricing and import duties affecting current sales performance

Electric vehicle giant Tesla is likely planning to expand its lineup in India with a new version of its popular Model Y, as the company looks to revive interest in a market where early response has been underwhelming.
The proposed model is expected to be a long wheelbase variant, previously introduced in China. Known as the Model Y L, this version offers a more spacious cabin with three rows of seating, accommodating up to six passengers. It is designed for buyers who prioritize interior space and family friendly practicality over standard configurations.
The move comes at a time when Tesla is facing slower than expected traction in India. Despite entering the market last year under the leadership of Elon Musk, the company has struggled to generate strong sales momentum. Reports suggest that only a limited number of units were sold in the country, reflecting hesitation among buyers, largely due to pricing concerns.
Currently, the Model Y is available in India in rear wheel drive and long range rear wheel drive variants. The starting price remains on the higher side, making it less competitive compared to other premium offerings. To address this, the company has even introduced discounts in recent months to clear inventory.
One of the key challenges Tesla faces in India is the cost structure. Vehicles are imported as fully built units from its facility in Shanghai, which leads to significant import duties. This pushes retail prices higher than in many global markets, making affordability a major barrier for potential buyers.
Performance remains one of the Model Yโs strengths. The rear wheel drive variant offers a range of around 500 kilometers on a single charge, while the long range version extends beyond 600 kilometers. Both variants deliver quick acceleration, reaching highway speeds in under six seconds, positioning them as strong contenders in terms of performance.
However, the global scenario is also becoming more competitive. Tesla has been facing increasing pressure from rivals, particularly BYD, which recently overtook the company in annual sales. Rising competition in key markets like China has added to Teslaโs challenges worldwide.
By introducing a more spacious and practical version of the Model Y, Tesla appears to be targeting a niche segment in India that values comfort and versatility. Whether this strategy can overcome pricing hurdles and reignite demand will become clearer once the new variant officially arrives.
