Final voter list released for greater Bengaluru authority polls amid delay row

Bengaluru, : Amid growing speculation over a possible postponement of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) elections, the authority has released the final voter list for five city municipal corporations. The move comes in line with the guidelines issued by the State Election Commission.
According to GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao, a total of 88,95,361 voters have been identified across 369 wards. Of these, 45,69,752 are male voters, 43,21,143 are female voters, and 1,633 fall under the ‘others’ category.
Providing ward-wise details, Rao said that Bengaluru South Ward 51 (Subramanyapura) has the highest number of voters at 54,026, while Bengaluru East Ward 16 (Kotturu) has the lowest at 10,940 voters.
The draft voter list was initially released on March 9, following which the public was given an opportunity to file objections. Officials stated that all objections were carefully reviewed and necessary corrections were made before publishing the final list.
“The final voter list has now been prepared as per due process, covering all 369 wards,” Rao said, adding that the exercise was conducted under the supervision of the State Election Commission.
Meanwhile, the issue of postponing the GBA elections has triggered political reactions. The Supreme Court had earlier directed the state government and the Election Commission to complete the elections by the end of June.
However, the state government has reportedly written to the Election Commission seeking a deferment of the polls. Reacting sharply, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy accused the ruling Congress of attempting to delay the elections due to internal conflicts.
He alleged that the party fears electoral defeat and is therefore trying to postpone the polls. “The Congress is aware that it may not return to power, and hence is seeking to delay the elections to avoid a setback,” he said.
The development has added a new dimension to the political discourse surrounding the GBA elections, with questions being raised over timing, preparedness, and intent.
