Bird flu scare intensifies in Bengaluru after H5N1 detected in Hesaraghatta farm

Bengaluru : Concern over bird flu has intensified in Karnataka after the deadly H5N1 Avian Influenza was detected in a government-run poultry farm at Hesaraghatta. The infection was confirmed during inspections carried out as per directions from the central government, prompting immediate containment measures.

Officials said the poultry farm has been shut down and all birds at the facility were culled to prevent further spread of the virus. The development has raised alarm as the farm was supplying chickens to multiple parts of the state, increasing the risk of wider exposure.

Bird flu, also known as avian influenza, primarily affects birds but can, in rare cases, spread to humans and other animals. With the detection in Bengaluru, authorities have stepped up surveillance and preventive measures across surrounding areas.

As a precaution, poultry workers at the affected farm have been placed under quarantine and are being closely monitored by health officials. The state government has also directed veterinary teams to conduct inspections in nearby poultry sheds and chicken outlets. Gram panchayats in the vicinity have been issued alert notices, and strict monitoring is underway.

Experts warn that higher temperatures can sometimes accelerate the spread of infections in poultry environments, making vigilance crucial during the summer season. Authorities are focusing on early detection and containment to avoid a larger outbreak.

Meanwhile, public health officials have urged citizens not to panic but to follow safety guidelines. People have been advised to maintain proper hygiene, avoid contact with sick or dead birds, and ensure that chicken and eggs are thoroughly cooked before consumption.

Consumption of raw or undercooked poultry products should be strictly avoided. Regular hand washing and use of sanitisers have been recommended as basic protective measures.

Officials also reiterated that there is no confirmed case of human infection linked to this outbreak so far. However, surveillance has been intensified to track any unusual symptoms among those exposed.

The state government is expected to continue strict monitoring and may issue further advisories depending on the evolving situation.
