Advanced parking system rolled out at KR Market to ease congestion

Bengaluru : In a major step toward addressing the chronic parking crisis in the city’s busiest  business  hub, authorities have introduced an advanced, Dubai-style parking system at Krishna Rajendra Market. The upgraded facility, located beneath the commercial complex, aims to streamline vehicle movement and provide a modern, tech-enabled parking experience for visitors.

The project has been developed at a cost of ₹6 crore and executed by a private operator that already manages the multi-level parking facility at Freedom Park. The contract for operating the KR Market parking space has been awarded for a period of 10 years, with an annual bid value of ₹41 lakh, which is expected to increase after five years.

Officials said the revamped parking facility incorporates cutting-edge features, including AI-enabled surveillance, ticketless entry and exit, and integrated digital payment systems. Motorists can now pay parking fees through FASTag or UPI, eliminating the need for physical tickets and reducing waiting time. Cameras installed at entry points capture vehicle and driver details, ensuring seamless monitoring and enhanced security.

One of the major concerns earlier was waterlogging during monsoon seasons, as floodwaters frequently entered the basement parking area. To address this, the new design includes large water storage sumps and high-capacity pumps to quickly drain out excess water during heavy rainfall. This is expected to significantly improve usability even during adverse weather conditions.

The facility has also been designed with user convenience in mind. Four elevators have been installed to provide direct access to the market area, making it easier for shoppers to move between levels. Additionally, seating arrangements for over 100 people, clean drinking water units, separate restrooms for men and women, and a food court are part of the upgraded infrastructure.

Special provisions have been made for women and persons with disabilities, with dedicated parking zones and enhanced safety measures. A total of 62 AI cameras have been installed across the premises, along with a centralized command center to monitor activities. Authorities have also introduced 12 panic buttons to ensure quick response in case of emergencies, particularly to safeguard women and children.

The facility further offers free Wi-Fi, valet parking services, wheelchair access, and electric vehicle charging points capable of supporting up to seven cars simultaneously. These additions reflect the city’s push toward adopting smart urban mobility solutions.

Connectivity has also been improved, with entry points from Avenue Road, BVK Iyengar Road, and nearby metro stations. An exit route has been planned to provide direct access toward Mysuru Road, although officials have sought cooperation from the civic body to clear encroachments and widen surrounding roads.

Regular visitors to KR Market have welcomed the development, noting that finding parking space has long been a challenge. Many said that unless one arrived early in the morning, it was nearly impossible to park near the  market, forcing them to leave vehicles at distant locations.

In a bid to preserve cultural identity, the facility also showcases the history of KR Market through informative banners and artwork. Statues of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and Kempe Gowda have been installed at the entrance, along with murals depicting landmarks such as Mysuru Palace and Hampi’s stone chariot.

With the introduction of this modern parking system, authorities hope to significantly ease congestion in one of Bengaluru’s most crowded  zones while enhancing overall commuter experience.
