As many as 205 elephants died from February to October. 51 buffaloes, 49 Grevy’s zebras, 512 wildebeests, 381 common zebras and 12 giraffes died. Different parts of Kenya have had inadequate rainfall for four consecutive seasons in the last two years, leaving people, including livestock, literally reeling, without water or food.

Only one rhino died in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary in Tsao West National Park, the government reported that the drought has not affected the rhinos much. According to the report, many ecosystems in Kenya’s most visited areas, such as Amboseli, Tsavo and Laikipia Samburu, national parks and parklands are in poor condition.

An emergency aerial census of wildlife has been suggested in Amboseli to get a broader picture of the impact of drought on wildlife there. Experts have recommended immediate provision of water and salt licks in drought-prone areas.

“We are losing livestock and millions of citizens are really affected by this problem,” said conservationist Nancy Githaiga of the Africa Wildlife Foundation.We are losing animals, we are losing wildlife, he said painfully.

For Gravy’s zebras, experts have urged immediate feeding of grass. Elephant Neighbors Center executive director Jim Justus Nyamu said elephants drink 240 liters of water a day. Officials say more than 500,000 people are at risk of starvation in northern Kenya’s Turkana region.

Deaths are attributed to depletion of food resources and lack of water. According to the Ministry of Tourism, Kenya had 36,000 elephants last year.
