Germany announces visa-free transit facility for Indian passport holders

New Delhi: Germany has announced a visa-free transit facility for Indian passport holders travelling through its airports, a move expected to significantly ease international travel for Indian citizens and further strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries. The decision was announced in the India–Germany Joint Statement released following German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to India, his first official visit to the country.

Under the new arrangement, Indian travellers transiting through German airports on their way to third countries will no longer be required to apply for a separate transit visa. In simple terms, this means that Indian passengers with valid travel documents and confirmed onward tickets can pass through German international airports without undergoing an additional visa process, making travel faster, smoother and less cumbersome.

Officials said the measure would particularly benefit students, professionals, tourists and business travellers who frequently use Germany as a transit hub for destinations across Europe, North America and other regions. Germany hosts some of the busiest and most connected airports in Europe, and the removal of the transit visa requirement is expected to save time, reduce paperwork and lower costs for Indian travellers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the decision and expressed his gratitude to Chancellor Merz, noting that the step reflects the growing trust and cooperation between India and Germany. In the Joint Statement, both leaders underlined that facilitating mobility and enhancing people-to-people contact is a key pillar of the strategic partnership between the two nations.

The statement emphasised that strong people-to-people relations form the foundation of long-term bilateral ties. Both sides reiterated their commitment to promoting closer engagement in education, research, skill development, culture and innovation. The leaders also welcomed the increasing exchange of students, researchers, skilled professionals, artists and tourists between India and Germany.

Germany acknowledged the valuable contribution of the Indian community to its economy, innovation ecosystem and cultural life. Indian professionals and students play a significant role in sectors such as information technology, engineering, healthcare, research and higher education, helping to address skill gaps and drive economic growth in Germany.

The visa-free transit facility is seen as part of a broader effort to make mobility easier and to deepen cooperation in areas such as higher education partnerships, joint research programmes and vocational training. Analysts believe the move could also encourage more Indian students and professionals to consider Germany as a preferred destination, given its strong universities, advanced research institutions and growing employment opportunities.

Overall, the decision marks an important step in enhancing bilateral relations and reflects a shared vision to build closer, more dynamic and people-centric ties between India and Germany.
