Over 165 children have died since August due to an unknown disease in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to several reports, the disease first emerged in the town of Gungu, Kwilu Province, in August, affecting children up to age five.

Regional health chief Jean-Pierre Basake was cited as saying that some of the infected children displayed malaria-like symptoms. The Kwilu health ministry has yet to begin studying the source of the disease and develop countermeasures.

Several reports indicate that the disease, which first appeared at the end of last August, particularly affects children under five years old. The head of the provincial health division pointed out that the victims also show signs of malaria.

“Besides malaria, someone can have another disease that we do not know, but that causes anemia “, said the doctor Jean-Pierre Basake to the mentioned means. According to the mayor of the rural commune of Mukedi, Alain Nzamba, an average of four deaths a day in its jurisdiction, which includes the towns of Lozo Munene and Kinzamba.

A team of specialists from the Ministry of Health was sent to the area to try to identify the source of the infection and develop protective measures against the disease.
