WhatsApp Support to End on Older Android Phones Users May Need to Upgrade Devices
Messaging platform prepares to discontinue support for outdated Android versions affecting millions of users while encouraging backups and upgrades to ensure uninterrupted access and smoother performance

Popular messaging service WhatsApp is preparing for a major change that will impact users of older smartphones. The platform is set to stop working on select outdated Android versions as part of its ongoing effort to improve performance and introduce new features.
Starting 8 September 2026, WhatsApp will no longer support devices running Android 5.0 and Android 5.1. Earlier, the app supported devices running Android 5.0 and above, but with the upcoming update, users on these older versions will lose access completely.
The decision is part of a broader shift aimed at ensuring better security, faster updates, and improved functionality. However, it also means that users still relying on older smartphones may soon be forced to upgrade their devices if they want to continue using the app.
Interestingly, WhatsApp has already started informing users about this change. According to reports from WABetaInfo, in app notifications are being shown on affected devices. These alerts are encouraging users to back up their chat history so that conversations and media can be restored when switching to a newer phone.
The impact of this move is expected to be more noticeable in regions where older smartphones are still widely used. Countries such as India, Brazil, and several parts of Africa and Asia are likely to see a larger number of users affected, as many devices in these markets no longer receive regular software updates.
For users who wish to continue using WhatsApp without interruption, upgrading to a device running Android 6.0 or later will become necessary. The change will apply to both the standard WhatsApp Messenger and WhatsApp Business, meaning business users will also need to ensure compatibility.
While Android users will face these new requirements, iPhone users are currently unaffected. Devices running iOS 15.1 and above will continue to support WhatsApp without any changes, allowing Apple users to carry on as usual for now.
As messaging apps evolve, maintaining compatibility with older systems becomes increasingly challenging. This latest update reflects WhatsApp’s focus on keeping its platform secure and optimized, even if it means leaving behind legacy devices.
